I woke up this morning fully anticipating the launch of the new iPhone. I called several Cingular/AT&T stores and most of them didn't carry it. I called a few Apple stores that were nearby (Stanford and Palo Alto) and they told me that the lines had approximately 200 people in it each, and this was before noon. One of them was even like "if you're not in line already then you're probably not going to own one today". I started to panic. What if I didn't get a hold of one today? I know it's not the end of the world because they probably made enough to go around, but it was the challenge that excited me. So I called the Burlingame Apple store. The guy said that their line was only 70-80 people long. Bingo! I ran around the apartment grabbing things as I go-beach towel, crackers, drinks, book, and magazine. I quickly slathered on sunscreen and told Rob what I was up to. I thought that even if I didn't get one today I will see to it that Rob does because he deserves one more than anyone else, including me. I got to the store and the line went around the store and curved into the parking lot in the back. I got there at noon and it was some of the boringest six hours of my life. It was worse than the Bill Clinton book signing even though that was a much longer wait. I thanked my lucky stars that I put on sunscreen cuz the sun burnt everyone else around me that didn't. Rob eventually joined me in the line and the line moved forward slowly but surely. We finally got in the store and we were in and out in a flash. We even got applause from the Apple store workers as we were leaving. They were awesome the whole time I was in line. They handed out SmartWater and sunscreen and pumped us up for the opening. We got home and we had some trouble activating them. Rob's iPhone is still not activated because ATT&T was not prepared for the volume of people who want to activate their iPhones tonight so they are officially swamped. We read several accounts of problems with activation from other eager iPhone users. For some reason, mine activated after the second try so it's working fine right now. I agree that it's an expensive piece of equipment but I think that it's not much different than buying a computer or purchasing a car. It will eventually be something that makes life so much easier that people will see it almost as a necessity. So far I love what I see and it's exactly what Steve Job's demonstrated in his keynote. Speaking of Steve, I got to see him the other day while having lunch at Mac Cafe with Rob. He was standing right next to me while I was in line and he was demonstrating the iPhone to an older lady. It was surreal to see him doing the same thing he did on tv but in real life. I have much to rave about this phone but I must go to sleep now. Night!
