...is upon us. Tomorrow I will be voting in one of the most significant presidential primaries this nation has ever seen. For the first time since 1928, there will be no incumbent president or vice president on the ballot. Also for the first time, either an an African American man or a White woman will be nearly guaranteed the Democratic bid. My generation is predicted to swing the vote for the Democratic nominee and perhaps even the entire election this year. I have friends that are actually excited to vote. It is a momentous occasion for the process that many of us take for granted in our adult years thus far.
I would like to reveal some of the reasons (not all) of why I will be voting for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Some of these reasons are purely personal and may not apply to the entire population, however I don't believe they are any less legitimate. Given the statistics I've perused in public opinion and polling, I've come across much less rational reasons why people would vote for a candidate than these.
1. She has decades of political experience. I know she's been pitching this one quite a bit throughout her campaign but it's true. She has the background for the job because she's been an advocate all her life (through advocacy groups), an active first lady for eight years, and an elected official for seven. She has the most well rounded knowledge of what's going on in politics as opposed to only being able to see things through one perspective and ignoring all the other avenues of political activity.
2. She's committed to the issues I care most about. Healthcare, education, and the economy have been sorely neglected in the last eight years and she's the person to bring them back to the table. Her universal healthcare plan covers mental health, while other candidates swept that under the rug because it's such a touchy subject in our country. She's willing to do the right thing even if it initially makes people uncomfortable.
3. She has shown her inner strength and endurance throughout this whole process.
4. Elect one Clinton and get the other one free as an added bonus! I think Bill has a more worldly perspective on things now that he is running his own charitable foundation. Their combined experience and skill sets are invaluable to cleaning up after what Bush's legacy has left us with. I like Obama's vision, but I can't see it translating to much when it comes to hands-on problem solving. He's good at rallying up his base with talk of "real change" but to me that's like the guy in the street corner shouting for everybody to get ready cuz Jesus is coming. Skeptical indeed.
5. I personally promised her husband I would about four years ago. Out of all the reasons I would vote for her, this reason has the least amount of weight on my decision. However, it's a fun anecdote to mention.
Happy voting!
